What Koza Han is known for

What Koza Han is known for

Koza Han is a historic inn commissioned by Sultan Bayezid II to provide income for his mosque and madrasa in Istanbul. The Republic of Türkiye Culture Portal names Abdullah bin Pulad Şah as its architect. It is part of the Hanlar District within the “Bursa and Cumalıkızık: Birth of the Ottoman Empire” World Heritage property, inscribed in 2014.

The building is also known by several historical names, including Yeni Han, Beylik Han and Kervansaray. Its name and commercial role reflect a long association with Bursa’s silk trade; today, it continues to function as a place of business.

The courtyard and surrounding market streets

The courtyard and surrounding market streets

A two-story building forms a rectangle around the central courtyard, with a single-story stable building, İç Koza Han, adjoining it to the east. The courtyard has a kiosk mosque, with a fountain beneath its upper-floor prayer space. On the north side, the monumental entrance is decorated with turquoise tiles.

Koza Han sits between Ulu Cami and Orhan Camii, and lower-floor doors also lead toward Orhan Camii and the covered bazaar. The han’s layout makes the courtyard a useful orientation point before you browse the surrounding market streets. For context on one of its neighboring landmarks, read this Ulu Cami Bursa visitor guide.

Shops and visitor etiquette

Shops and visitor etiquette

Koza Han is an active commercial market, not only a historic building. Upper-floor shops sell silk fabrics, scarves, shawls, clothing, silver, gifts, and dowry and home-textile goods. Cafeterias occupy the lower floor, while the courtyard is arranged with cafés and tea gardens.

Allow room for people shopping and working as you move through the arcades. If you want to browse, take time to look through the upper-floor shops as well as the ground-level spaces; the two floors have different offerings.
